Daksha who is the father of Goddess Sati insulted the lord Shiva and Sati. Her father insulted a lot. so goddess Sati sacrificed herself in the Yogna. On hearing this, lord Shiva got angry and he started to dance for destroyed this universe. To prevent this, lord Vishnu Sliced the body with his Chakra. The portion between Devi Sati’s eyebrows- symbolic of her mind – is said to have fallen in this region. A shrine was erected later and was consecrated to the worship of Shaivaite forces.
There is a popular myth surrounding how the place got its present name. Once upon a time RISHI ASTA BAKRA landed in Bakreshwar where he meditated and chanted prayers in praise of Shiva for ten thousand years. Lord Shiva got pleased with his dedication thus he asked Vishwakarma – the architect of the gods – constructed a beautiful temple in honour of the sage. This temple came to be known as the Bakreshwar Shakti Peetha.
The idol worshiped as MONOPATHA DEVI MAHISASURO MARDINI DURGA.
